Seasonal Cleaning Guide for North Queensland Homes

Townsville has two very different seasons — and your cleaning routine should reflect both. Here's a practical guide to what to tackle, and when.

Seasonal Cleaning Guide for North Queensland Homes

Unlike southern states with four distinct seasons, Townsville runs on two: the dry (roughly April to October) and the wet (November to March). Each season brings its own cleaning challenges — and knowing what to focus on makes a real difference to how your home feels year-round.

The Dry Season (April – October)

This is cleaning season. Lower humidity, open windows, and longer dry spells make the dry season the best time for thorough home maintenance.

What to focus on:

  • Deep clean the whole house — take advantage of the dry air to air out mattresses, wash cushion covers, and get into every corner.
  • Clean ceiling fans and vents — dry dust builds up fast on fan blades and gets redistributed every time they spin.
  • Wash flyscreens — they catch red dust all dry season and need a good soak.
  • Check and clean air-conditioning filters — before the build-up of another wet season.
  • Pressure wash outdoor areas — patios, driveways and pool surrounds look best when cleaned in the dry season before the wet starts again.
  • Window clean inside and out — dry conditions mean streak-free results.

The Wet Season (November – March)

This is maintenance season. High humidity, frequent rain and heat make it harder to keep on top of things — but a few focused habits prevent the mould, mildew and moisture damage that can build up fast.

What to focus on:

  • Weekly bathroom ventilation — wipe down shower walls and grout after every use to prevent mould forming.
  • Under-sink checks — moisture collects under bathroom and kitchen sinks during the wet. Check monthly.
  • Mould treatment on grout and silicone — a light mould treatment every 4–6 weeks during the wet keeps it manageable.
  • Laundry and soft furnishings — dry clothes inside if possible; humidity on damp fabric indoors can create its own mould problem.
  • Entry points — mud, sand and wet from tropical downpours. Good mats and a quick floor mop after rain keeps it under control.

Year-Round Habits That Make Both Seasons Easier

  • Wipe the stovetop after every cook
  • Keep a microfibre cloth in every bathroom
  • Empty bins before they overflow
  • A 15-minute whole-home tidy before bed prevents weekend overwhelm
